OK, I went to bed at 22.00h as my room mate likes to go to bed early and now I am wide awake since 3 a´clock. Took the computer out to write a little. A roster calling in the night.

I dressed and went to particpate in the early morning birding. There was a very nice moon and a planet, probably Venus, on a slightly foggy sky. We made an effort to find the sunbitten at the stream, but didn´t. But we did see a Green Heron, well camouflaged on the bank of the stream. We also saw a Yellow crowned Euphonia. Sadly, I did not get any shot on it. And some hummingbird.

Breakfast on our feet still watching birds at the feeder. We left Gavilan Lodge at 7.10 with the staff waving goodbye after us.

Then we headed for Rio san Jose to check the sunbitten, but no luck this time either. We saw herons and some sandpipers.

We made a quick stop at a small wetland beside the road. There were some herons and ducks.

Next stop was Arenal and our new lodge Linda Vista. But before that we went on the Hanging Bridges in the treetops. A bit scary at first until you got used to it. But I did not like when people got too close to my neck. :(
Between the bridges were step, slippery paths. They had put some bricks on it but it made my feet unsteady.  It was hard on the calves and the feet especially as my right one was hurt already. Here we also met our first leaf cuting ants. Lots of them.

Herman, our CR birdguide, is a short man. It is lucky for us because HG are tall with long legs. So it evens up the pace a bit.

Here I am at the Center for Hanging Bridges, Tenorio National Park, overlooking Arenal or Tenorio Volcano, Nf Photo 110330

It took ages to get to the Lodge. A really bumpy road and the driver turned and twisted to avoid the worst holes. Luckily there was not much traffic. We were supposed to have gone to the thermal bath but it was so late so most of us settled for a swim in the pool. It was already dark so it was quite nice. But cloudy so we had no view over Arenal.

Dinner was served at 20.00 and I had chicken, butit was so dry and overcoocked it was no joy in eating it. After dinner the traditional species checks for today. Sitting in the garden.

Rainforest with a glimpse of the Hanging Bridge crowded with people, even though it was limited to a specific no of people at any given time

  1. I would have been very happy to see the green heron! That's great. Sorry about the dry chicken and the bumpy road but the birds and insects would make it worth it for me. :)
